Data were collected as part of a larger study, and additional study details are published elsewhere.33 Participants were recruited through the Michigan Problem Gambling Help-line, a state-funded 24-hour helpline, staffed with trained professionals who provide assessment and brief counseling for current gambling problems. All callers who meet criteria for gambling disorder are provided with a referral to community providers.

Current financial problems were assessed by asking about the presence or absence of six financial consequences related to gambling within the past year (ie, borrowing from credit cards, borrowing from friends or family, borrowing from other sources, difficulty paying household bills, using savings or equity, and filing for bankruptcy). Responses to these items were summed (0–6) to represent a total financial stress score.

Due to the high number of comparisons potentially inflating the Type I error rate, only p values less than or equal to .01 were considered statistically significant, at the bivariate level. In multivariate models, the more traditional significance level of .05 was used.
